Finding Lawyers

A Forbes article in May 2017 cites that “lawyers are in the persuasion and collaboration business”.

My father, the lawyer. Being a daughter of a late lawyer myself I agree with the above observation or statement. Even as a young child back then, my father would mention to me that for lawyers to win their cases, they must really know how to persuade. And that a lawyer must work well with others and collaborate with them – that will not only ensure one’s success in the legal field, it will also ensure one’s longevity in it.

I can no longer ask my father today to what extent he understood the importance of persuasion and collaboration even during his early years in law school. But, today I wonder how law schools are preparing their students to be persuasive and collaborative even before they embark on their profession after passing the bar. I wonder how prepared they are to go into their field which is noted as being a very saturated one.

Too many lawyers? The legal profession appears to be a really saturated one. Statistics from the American Bar Association point out that in the US, there are now about 1.3 million lawyers! To add some more numbers: 35, 000 new lawyers enter the workforce yearly!

Yes, a person may love being a lawyer. Perhaps it is one’s childhood dream even, to some degree influenced by family members being lawyers themselves. Perhaps, it is the profession that best fits a person – one’s skills and abilities clearly point out to it as one’s sure career path. But the challenge today is perhaps more on how one can distinguish one’s self as the lawyer the people needs.

Being sought and found. How does one do that? How does a lawyer distinguish one’s self from other lawyers? Three things come to mind:

  1. Accepting high profile cases. A lawyer handling high profile cases will be mentioned in the news, on TV. Name recall from being heard or read about will certainly be a big plus for them in being sought by clients.
  2. Necessary promotion and marketing. A lawyer and a lawyer’s services need to be known, promoted in ever-widening circles thereby increasing one’s reach of clients. The best way for this to be done is to connect with a reliable marketing company with a specific focus on lawyers like that of the Lawyers of Distinction.
  3. Excelling in ones’ legal career focus or specialization. Whether it is environmental, criminal or business law one decides to focus or specialize on, one needs to excel and continue excelling in this area. Despite the large number of lawyers today, the reality is people still require their services. People just need to know who they are and where to find them.
